As you may well already know, fish oil is also commonly referred to as omega-3 fish oil, and of course it is an extremely popular health supplement due to its many benefits. For those who are interested in fish oil vitamins, it can be derived from eating oily fish, or else you may choose to take capsules instead.

The Benefits

Essentially, there are numerous health benefits regarding the regular intake of fish oil vitamins. For example, it has been shown to reduce and improve the overall health of the digestive system. It is also known to improve the condition of the liver, kidneys, and heart. Furthermore, studies also suggest that it helps to reduce depression. Even though fish oil in its natural form is available to us in the flesh of many fish, Western diets do not usually include enough fish. In other words, the average Western diet does not contain sufficient amounts of omega-3 enzymes in order to be beneficial, and for this reason it is advisable for people to take supplements in capsule form.

Various Types

The omega- which one finds in fish oil supplements is by no means a byproduct of fish, but instead, fish derive this from the algae they live on. The good news is that even vegetarians can benefit from omega-3 fatty oils simply by including products which contain these algae in their daily diets.

Storage Requirements

Ideally, fish oil supplements should be stored in a refrigerator. This is because if the capsules are exposed to direct sunlight or the heat generated from a nearby table lamp for example, the capsules can become sticky, and if left for a prolonged period of time, the taste can also be affected. Providing you store your capsules in a refrigerator, they should last at least until the specified expiry date. Considering that the capsules usually don’t have a strong fishy smell, if you do notice a strong smell the capsules should be discarded.

Link between Fish Oil and Behavioral Problems

Over and above the many other benefits of fish oil, it is believed that omega-3 fatty oils can also help to reduce depression and mood swings. In fact, a Swedish study recently determined that fish oil is a highly successful form of treatment for ADHD in children and adults alike, as it’s capable of eliminating up to 50% of the symptoms. Even though scientists have not yet determined why fish oil can treat the symptoms of ADHD, they do however know that fatty acids help to boost concentration levels.

Dosage

While there seems to be no set dosage, it is recommended that those with high cholesterol consume approximately two to four grams per day. Those suffering from arthritis on the other hand should try to include at least 1 gram per day, and those looking to reduce high should consider taking up to 3 grams per day.

Of course, as with all health supplements, you may want to consider discussing your intentions with a doctor before you begin with a fish oil supplement, although it should be said that there are no known side effects.
